In Seemos, magic is power. The Nine Bishops, the king’s living weapons, are its masters. Those born without it serve it, and never will have it. They are called Filth. Mika is Filth. She scrubs and hauls for mages who will never learn her name, and she hides the one crime that would see her branded. She reads. Every stolen page is a step toward the east, where a Filth who can read might live like a person. Then her blood wakes, people die, and the truth she was never told comes with it. Her family was erased. Her power should not exist. And the mages who did it still rule. Reaching them means the Selection of Sixteen, a tournament fought to the death for a seat among the Nine. To take her revenge, Mika must master a power she does not understand to become the thing she hates most. One of the Nine Bishops.

Full description

Every drop of Steam on Synthara comes out of one hole in the desert. No one who goes in has ever walked back out. Steam is power in a bottle. A sharper mind, fire in your hands, a stranger’s face, any gift you can pay for, burned away in minutes and worth killing for on every street in Metro. People install chips in their skulls and steel where their arms used to be, and Steam still outranks all of it. Those who hold it run the streets, and above the streets they run Synthara. The entire supply climbs out of the Crater, a prison sunk ninety-nine floors into the rock, where thousands of collared inmates haul stone for a system that has never once explained itself. Conrad has spent his life keeping his head down, one drop of Steam to his name and no clan to answer for him. It takes a single Abomination, a machine that answers to no one, standing on a street that had never seen one, to end that life. His sentence is three months. He plans to survive it the way he survived Metro. Head down, debts short, nothing worth taking. Then he draws a cellmate who argues with a man who is not there, and meets a girl who walks the levels without a collar and without fear. They call themselves Freelancers, the crew that takes the jobs nobody else survives. Nobody sentenced them. They broke in. Every heist breaks out of a prison. This one breaks in. Because the Crater is more than a prison. Beneath the quotas, the collars, and the machines that patrol its floors, something older is running on a schedule of its own, and the deeper the crew goes, the clearer it becomes that the truth about where Steam comes from was never meant to be survived. A standalone heist novel set in the Nostone Universe. Complete story, no cliffhanger.

When the eclipse comes, worlds die. The last one fell thousands of years ago, and nobody alive believes in it. Nobody was left alive to record it. Except one. Requiem gave his childhood to the Bastions, the warrior Pillar of Alowah’s faith, and rose faster than any bird in its history. Third of the nine Blades. Strong enough to carry a black lance no one else can lift. And in the quiet behind his prayers, not sure he believes a word of it. Then the Ascendant, a leader older than scripture, summons every Pillar to the Central Arch and speaks a single sentence. The time for the Pilgrimage has come. Bound to him by her own hand: a Threadweaver who can bend the world and cares for nothing, and a missionary who can move minds and believes enough for all three. Their road runs through Lush, a green world where everything that grows is hungry and everything that moves is hunting, to Ravage, a city that covers a planet, where people of science keep one word ready for pilgrims who preach the end of the world. Zealots. Ravage does not believe in the eclipse. Neither did the last world it killed.

Hivefall: The Codex of the Fallen Civilizations

Every civilization. Every fall. The assembled history of the Nostone universe, compiled by the one mind that survived to write it.

Full description

Not a novel. A history. Everything known about the events now called Hivefall, assembled from recovered probe findings, salvage, and the research logs of the gods themselves, and narrated by Cortex: the shipboard intelligence that was present for every version of these events that ever ran to its end. Six young civilizations were touched by bored gods; five inherited fragments of the gods’ greatest mistake; this is how each of them rose and how each of them fell. It is analytical, sourced, and honest about its own limits: nothing here is deemed the truth of the universe, only what was observed. Written for anyone who wants the full lore of the Nostone universe, even if you never play the game. Fair warning: it is full-spoiler from the first page. If you plan to play Hivefall, we recommend experiencing the story in the game first.

About the author

Jon Astashinsky

Jon Astashinsky

Jon Astashinsky is a fantasy author and the founder of Nostone Media. A West Point graduate, he spent five years as a logistics officer in the U.S. Army before trading convoys for code and landing in tech, where he now works at Amazon Web Services.

Along the way he’s lived on three continents — North America, Europe, and Australia — picked up a rock climbing habit, and burned through more books and audiobooks than he can count. Patrick Rothfuss got him into writing; Brandon Sanderson made him believe he could build an entire universe of his own. So now he’s building one.

Jon lives with his wife Amanda and their two kids, who outrank everything above. When he’s not writing or programming, he’s probably gaming.
